How to Plan a Music-Video Soundstage Layout

Written by Viva Studio Rentals Team

Camera recording a singer performing with a band

Draw one floor plan before load-in. Include the performance area, sets, camera paths, lighting, playback, cable routes, equipment staging, crew paths, and support rooms.

Double-check every camera and performer movement against the usable floor space, equipment positions, and cable routes.

Assign the stage, flex space and support rooms to specific set, equipment, crew and talent uses.

Map the Stage

At Viva, map the 45 × 40 ft stage, 18 ft ceiling, 13.5 ft grid, and separate 1,000 sq ft flex space against the shot list before booking.

Assign the open stage and flex space to planned sets, props, and staging. Bring the footprint and load-in list before booking.

List the Set Elements

The production supplies or arranges its props, backdrops, set pieces, creative direction, and crew. Double-check dimensions and load-in before booking.

The 25 × 25 ft cyc is white and pre-lit by default. A $300 floor refresh and a $1,000 full colour swap are available as repaint add-ons. Prices are before HST. Verify the colour and scheduling before booking.

Plan Lighting, Playback, and Production Audio

Lighting and playback need separate positions, cable routes, operators, and test time. Verify the included fixtures and optional equipment before load-in.

If the production records dialogue or live audio, bring the audio crew and equipment required. The stage is sound-treated, not soundproof, so test the room before booking.

Plan the Booking Window

Prepare the schedule, shot list, script, storyboard, sets, crew, equipment, and approvals before load-in, then leave time for tests and changes.

Use the studio and equipment manager for facility and rental-equipment questions. The production remains responsible for its creative and technical departments and schedule.

Confirm the Layout

The final layout should show the performance area, sets, camera paths, lighting positions, playback, cable routes, equipment staging, crew paths, and support-room assignments.

Draw the music-video floor plan to scale and verify that performance, camera, lighting, playback, and safety paths fit the stage. Review the Toronto studio rental.
